Ruminations on 2018; Promises of 2019

At the closing of a year, it is natural to reminisce on the previous year, and look forward to and plan for the coming year. I wanted to share some of the highlights of my previous year with you, and let you in on what you can expect in the coming year.

In 2018…

My publishing company grew and incorporated other authors.

I was proud to publish Kyle Adams’ debut novel Through the Lichgate through my publishing company, Brief Conceits. It is a suspenseful and engaging story about a teenage girl learning to juggle her everyday life with her powers of necromancy, her ability to animate and manipulate dead bodies. I was so enamored with Kyle’s characters and so thrilled by the action, that I knew I wanted to help him make this book a reality. If you haven’t checked out this book yet, I encourage you to check it out! I know that Kyle is currently working on a sequel that will expand the mythos of world in new and interesting ways.

I became the operator of the best* writing MeetUp group in Huntsville.

My good friends Jeremy Bronaugh and Lynsey Moradin, owners and operators of Hypertophic Press, decided to step back a little from some of their publishing and writing obligations to prepare for some substantial life changes coming up for them in 2019. They asked me to take on their MeetUp group, Coffee & Critique. This has been an added challenge, but a welcome one. If it were not for Jeremy and Lynsey, and Coffee & Critique, I do not know if I would have finished An Inconvenient Presidency a few years ago. If you are a writer and live in or around the Huntsville, Alabama, please consider joining us. We offer monthly in-person critiques of each other’s work, and coming in 2019 we will be doing even more writer hang-outs and classes!

*“best” is entirely subjective on my part, but still appropriate

In 2019…

I will be publishing more books than ever!

Not only will I publish the first book in my children’s fantasy series The Wrong Unicorn, I will also be publishing at least two more books in my Presidents of the Uncanny States of America series. One will be coming by February if everything goes well!

I will start a writing blog.

What you’re reading right now is the start of this blog. I plan on publishing blogs on writing, book reviews, and updates on my own projects. I am also planning on producing YouTube videos along these lines as well, so please look forward to that.

I will be expanding Coffee & Critique’s local and online presence, as well as its services.

The heart and soul of Coffee & Critique will be its local in-person critique sessions. But I am planning on expanding it so that it is easier to find online, and will also offer other services: namely networking for local authors and classes on improving writing and learning how to get published. Some of this will also be posted online for people outside of the local area.

I will continue having fun, and invite you to join me!

My primary goal in writing is to give myself joy: to enjoy the process, and to delight myself with the final product. I feel that if I can make a product that I enjoy, that maybe there are other people out there who will find joy in it too. If you have found joy in one of my books, I am so glad you did! I thank you profusely for reading, and I hope you’ll stick around and see what more I have to offer in this coming year. It’s my goal to put a smile on your face, and maybe get you to burst laughing out loud if I’m lucky.

Thank you so much for all the encouragement and support you give me. Here is to a great 2019!
